what do the british think regarding gun rights? Right to bear arms?
Hello, I'm american and a gun owner,here in the states we enjoy a huge amount of gun rights, I look across the atlantic with pity,to see firearm owners suffer,my question is,what do the english believe? After all the first thing a tyrant does is take away arms from the people, just wondering, thank you
there is an assumption that British people think like Americans

until 1935 there were no gun laws in the UK, it was easier to own any sort of firearm in the Uk than it is in Texas, criminals, the insane and the clinically stupid could all buy guns, no background checks, no cooling off period, no limits not even a need to register the gun with anyone.
despite this, only 10% of the population owned a gun, and gun crime made up about 4% of the total of all crimes nationwide.
from the 1980's onwards a series of laws began to be passed that began to limit what could be owned.
in the mid 80's semi automatics were banned, around 30,000 people were affected (pop 50+ million)
in the late 90's pistols were banned around 60,000 people were affected (pop 58 million)
today people can own rifles and shotguns, around 10% of the population own a firearm, (basically the same people who owned guns in 1935) the bulk of these are farmers and other rural dwellers, (hunters and sporting shooters) and gun crime makes up 3% of all crime nationwide. (22 fatal shootings last year out of 687 murders nationwide for example) (pop 62 million)
The various governments who passed these laws have all been and gone, voted out via the ballot, hardly the work of tyrants! (also worth considering what democratically elected government would ever pass such strict laws if they knew they would prove unpopular with the voting majority, the simple fact is they could pass these laws safe in the knowledge most voters either agreed or were simply unconcerned)
What protects us from tyrants is not guns in our homes it is the moral code of our military, the fact is for all your weapons, should one day (god forbid) a president orders the US army to oppress america, it will be down to the US military to decide what is right or wrong, should they decide to obey him, then all your weapons will not stop it, just look at Iraq, (a nation that had a higher percentage of gun owners than the US), their right to bear arms did not save Saddam from the noose, nor did it drive out the invaders or send the US military fleeing
i suppose it is all to do with English peoples natural cynicism, frankly they wouldn't trust their neighbours with guns, and anyone who used a gun on someone would be roundly mocked by all and sundry for being 'too gutless to go toe-to-toe'
I know that gun owners in the US hear some american anti-gun advocates claim gun laws will stop gun crime, this is nonsense of course, it will cut it down but no laws can ever be passed that will stop something 100%, (so the next time one of them uses the UK as some sort of example of how well gun laws work, just point out to them that gun crime has always been low in the UK, even when it had gun laws that made Texan laws look like soviet Russia)
