I live in Michigan and opening day for duck is Oct. 9. I know i need some teals, woodies and mallards, black ducks. Any others you see early on? And also if you have any ideas on spreads. Thanks.
i see pintails and shovelers early on too. i like pintail decoys because the contrast is easy for ducks to see. i will usually include a bluebill for this reason too. as for ideas on spreads, there are a bunch of opinions, i like about 25% of my decoys to face some direction other than into the wind. you do that by tying the line on the other end of the keel, or the middle. ducks that are at rest will face all directions. its only when they become alarmed that they all turn into the wind and get ready to fly. if i am hunting somewhere with cattails or other standing weeds, then i like to nestle one or two decoys in them, usually teal. we cant see them from the ground, but i think from the air it looks good to the ducks. also, its just my experience, but i have more luck turning early season ducks with a teal whistle instead of a duck call. if they are close enough to hear it obviously. another note on spreads, its been said that early in the season that ducks congregate in random patterns, and later in the winter they start pairing up a little, while still staying in a loose group. good luck chuck!
