Why are carbohydrates found attached to integral membrane proteins on the outside, but almost never on the inside (cytoplasmic face) of cell membranes?
I know that they are on the outside for identification. So that cells know if they are alike or unalike (like with the different blood types) but I don't know why they are NOT found on the inside???
I think you're on the right track. Glycolipids & glycoproteins (carbohydrates linked to lipids & protein respectively) are used mainly for cell-to-cell interactions, markers, and extracellular structure. Why would you need to have these on the inside? The cell uses other mechanisms to interact with itself, and it already knows what it is. It also has other fibrins for structure within itself.
Apparently, according to Wikipedia, glycoproteins are in cytosol, but they don't yet understand what they're used for - and they're not attached to the cell membrane.
I would just say something like "they are utilized for functions that are only necessary on the outside of the cell."
