I am having a tough time reloading the 44 Magum ammo. I am using winchester brass shot once with hornady 240 gr JHP. I have an RCBS single stage press with carbide dies. my question is, what is the proper flaring for the 44 magnum? If i flare the cases 1/8" and then seat the bullets it does not set to the crimping groove. If I flare the case to accept the bullet up to the crimping groove. I get case distortion and it will not go int the cylinder. I am having difficulty with this round and need help.
1/8" is way too much. You are working your brass much more than you need to. For JHP bullets you barely need any flare (if any at all). The purpose of flaring the case mouth is to keep the brass from shaving the bullet as it is seated. With a jacketed bullet this isn't as much of a concern.
When you load rifle cartridges, you don't flare the case at all.
Make sure you are seating and crimping in two different steps. Seat all your bullets then re-adjust your die and put a nice roll crimp on them.
