Holsters for Females?
I'm a small female, 5' and 115 lbs. I purchased a Glock 26 for concealed carry purposes. However, I'm trying to figure out ways to carry it. I've thought about carrying it in my purse, but that doesn't seem practical. I'd rather carry it on my body. Same thing with a fanny pack, so don't suggest that (when have you ever seen a young female with a fanny pack, anyway?). It's difficult because I do wear relatively form fitting clothing. Waistband holsters are not an option... maybe guys can pull that off, but I can't. I've been looking at small of the back holsters, shoulder holsters, and ankle holsters. I want something that will be comfortable but not detectable. Someone also suggested a thigh holster for me while wearing longer skirts. However, someone else told me that thigh holsters are a media creation. Does anyone know about that? If anyone has any suggestions or advice for a female pistol carrier, I'd greatly appreciate it. Comfort and concealment are key. Thanks guys!
Holsters for CCW for a lady are tough to choose. You end up with some trade offs. Believe me, my wife deals with it daily. You are quick to play off the "fanny pack". It is actually a pretty good way for a lady to carry. there are sporty looking ones, very small ones, a few are more like a cell phone case etc. They do work well, plus they keep the firearm right there with you. And yes, I see lot's of attractive young and old females with fanny packs in front, more with the younger ladies. A good shoulder holster will work, but you are limiting yourself to wearing a suit jacket etc all day, indoors or out, regardless of temps. I am against SOB holsters. and you will be too the first time you wear one. You can't sit comfy to drive or work, it hurts your back, it is VERY easy for someone to take your firearm away and I have seen several people wearing them with light coats or shirts that rode up over the holster, exposing the firearm, and the wearer never realized it. A thigh holster is more hollywood than fact, but they are available. Hope your bow legged though. Think about a small framed firearm strapped to your inner thigh when you walk, or better yet, trying to pull your dress up high enough to get access to the firearm in a hurry, nuff said on thigh holsters. An ankle holster almost got me killed. They are VERY slow and akward to draw from. I was off duty and in civillian clothes. I was wearing an ankle holster when I drove over to my aunts house to visit. I found the front door open slightly and figured she had seen or heard me drive up and had opened the door for me, as she had done in the past. As I entered her home, I called out hello, and turned down the short hallway to the kitchen. As I did so, a VERY large man carrying a baseball bat was entering it from the other end. I dropped to get at my ankle holster, he swung at my head and just barely missed, as I fumbled to get my pants leg up so I could draw my weapon, he drew back for another swing. As I finally drew my pistol and yelled at him to freeze, my aunt came around the corner and screamed that he was the neighbor. I darn near shot him. She had heard someone in the back yard and called the neighbor over to check it out. He brought mr bat with him. If I was a split second slower dropping, he would have bashed my head in.
What I am saying is that there is no ONE holster to cover all CCW needs. My wife uses a shoulder bag from "WWW(dot)MAXPEDITION(dot)COM when no other option is available, Like when riding on the back of our Harley, she slings it cross shoulder. She also uses a nice sporty fanny pack with built in holster (medium size) for casual wear, a fobus paddle holster for other times,a galco shoulder holster under her suit coat while at work, a cell phone type belt holster when hot weather arrives, and as a last resort, a CCW purse holster, but she never lets it out of her immediate area, and even then, I don't care for it because if you need the firearm, it isn't doing you any good on the floor by your chair in a purse. Same goes with the planner type holster.
Hope this helped.
