We just rented the cutest (OK, it needs a lot of work) cabin that is behind a farm (steer and 1 giant horse) on over 100 acres and behind us are deep woods for 3000 acres. We are really looking forward to spending a lot of time there for the next 5 months as it's only 40 minutes from our boring suburban home in NY state (western New York).
The owner said we could put a salt lick up to attract deer, we're working on bird feeders and bird baths (saw our first ever Bluebird yesterday!), but we want to maximize our exposure to wild life here.
What else can we put out that would be interesting and safe? We will be moving out by end of October when winter sets in, and I don't want to get the animals dependent on us for anything. How does one place a salt lick? Will other animals go near it?
You purchase a salt block from the local farm and seed supply. You find a spot where you can see the animals using it from a window. You place the salt block on the ground or on a stake and watch. Large mammals will come to the salt lick and use it.
Don't worry about the animals becoming dependent upon you if you bait them. It adds to the meager amount of food they find in the forest and increases their chances of survival.
The reason forest rangers don't want you feeding the animals is it brings them into close contact with humans and even the cute little cuddly rabbits and squirrels have big, sharp teeth and claws, and carries diseases, plague is only one of many.
Feeding also causes them to loose their fear of humans and makes them easy prey during hunting season.
