ok so I have roommates that are extremely loud, and I am trying to come up with a solution. yeah, I could talk to them. That's not what I am asking. Question is, is what works better then ear plugs? I have heard of the new boise ear phones, but it seems like it's more designed to suite air plane travelers then the commoner peasant. I want to completely eliminate all sound without sticking barb wire in my ear drum. Thanks.
When I need heavy-duty noise blocking, I use ear plugs AND hearing protection ear muffs AND white noise, all at the same time. You can't eliminate all sound (short of the barbed wire), but most of the time this combination does the job for me.
Noise-cancelling headphones really only work well for continuous low-frequency sound, like on an airplane. Intermittent or higher-pitched sounds (like voices) will still come through. If you want to listen to music and block out external sounds, try in-ear headphones, aka "canalphones" -- they're like earplugs with tiny speakers inside. They're what professional stage musicians use. You can get good quality ones for $40 to $80 from Sennheiser or Etymotic.
