When your poems arrive early, do you recognise them all?
May I never lose my morning muse.
I have a mental seat belt
a sort of safety device
but I’ve found another use for it
which is working out quite nice.
If you just think how a real one works?
On impact, a momentum arrester.
Each morning, my dreams are the passengers.
The impact of awakening is the tester.
This seat belt is made from elastic
Almost like a bungee rope
So it lets the dreams fly out past my eyes
While I cherry pick out the best ones, …I hope.
The raw materials for the first poem of the day
from my constantly, replenishable, serendipitous dawn.
God forbid, should my seat belt, ever tatter or fray
And I wake to its snap, and my dreams are all gone.

Indeed they do not
On the 4:10 to Chicago
Before it gets hot
With speed they fly
