How can I make this better?
“Everyone stay still,” Sean warned, slowly raising his sword. The yellow rubber shined in the bits of light that came down through the treetops. Sean took one step forward and extended his sword. He closed his eyes, leaned a few inches, and poked the sword at the snakes rubbery skin. “It's not alive,” he said with a smile, opening his eyes again as he turned to his friends.
“Well, that was a close one,” Jess sighed in relief. Just then she noticed a bird flying from tree limb to tree limb above. Its beak was bright orange and the rest of its body was all black like a crow mixed with a swan. However, even the so-called black feathers shined in the light. Like the snake, the bird was made of pure rubber, but the most disturbing thing was not the robber... It was alive.

It's beak was bright orange and the rest of it's body was all black like a crow crossed with a swan, and even it's so-called feathers shined in the light. Like the snake, the bird was made of pure rubber, but the most disturbing thing was not the rubber, it was alive!
