Gearbox Bearing Grease

Gearbox Bearing Grease
What type of oil to lubricate the gearbox of a tiller?

I got a free MTD front tine tiller. Had to put a new 6.5 horse engine on it, and it worked fine...until the engine runs but the tines don't turn. There is a series of bicycle type chains and sprockets in the gearbox that connect the shaft of the motor to the shaft of the tines. I opened it up at the top. The bearing was dry and had spun out, I replaced that. The top chain and sproket was bone dry and a link was bent and cracked, I'm fixing that this afternoon. The original lube had turned to what looked like wax along the sides of the gearbox.

What type of lube should I put in there and how much? I don't want it to leak out into my garden when tilling, but I want it thin enough to keep everything lubricated. I've got everything from 30 weight motor oil, 80 weight gear lube, 303 trans-hydraulic fluid, to wheel bearing grease sitting in my garage.
It's such and old tiller that I can't find the manual for it online.

since it's not running hot like an engine, I would avoid motor oil. I would guess 80 weight gear oil, but that would be just a guess on my part. See if you can download a PDF of the maintenance manual online.
