Are they adjustable to fit most horses? What is worth the money and what isn't? Can you get the basic saddle and add as you go? I would like to be able to carry camping/fishing supplies for a week or so. Someday it would be great to go on a hunting trip using only the horses as transportation.
I've had horses most all my life but am a novice with pack saddles. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
Pack saddle can come in slightly different sizes, but they are pretty much one-size-fits-most. You adjust the fit with blankets or pads.
If you are doing it just for the occasional week trip - I would get the panniers that fit right to a western saddle. McClelland, Decker, and Sawbuck saddles can be complicated to use and expensive unless you are using it every day. I would look into panniers that go right on your western saddle.
I would also recommend a book called Horses, Hitches, and Rocky Trails by Joe Back. You can get it on Amazon for ten bucks - its a good book for someone looking to get into packing.
