I may be going hunting for Spring Turkey in SouthWest Florida. I was wondering what type of gear should I bring? I am going bow hunting so, would a 55 pound draw weight be stong enough? What type of arrows should I use? What type of clothing? What type of calls and what is the method in which you use the calls (frequency and length of the call)? Also how can I hunt for turkey if I am not using ground blind or a tree stand? Where on the turkey should I shoot? And should I use decoys?
I have never been hunting before and am strongly hoping to go sometime soon, so any info and/or tips will help a bundle.
I have shot the bow before I go to the archery range alot and I am a fairly decent shot with one.
gear - wear something light, cover all skin you can (even your face) to help stop ticks and your harder to see that way lol.
dont get to dressed up cuz youll over heat. bring LOTS of water. get a good owl hoot as a spoter call and a box call is good for starters. turkey hunting is best from the ground but then you really have to watch for snakes. and you pretty much have to have decoys, i use 2 females and one male. but make sure you spike them in the ground good...i almost got a shot at a huge 22lbs bird but the wild knocked over my decoy and scard it off...i was so pissed....
watch as many turkey hunting shows as you can, its easyer to learn from watching something then to read about it.
scout the area you want to hunt for turkey signs ( poo, prints, fethers, sounds,) if you see a bobcat or coyote or hog, dont hunt it, most likely they well never come around.
just remember, they see and hear almost everything.
dont know much about bow hunting..other then cross bows for deer.
