I have an old model 788 22-250 that is starting to rust a little and the bluing is coming off of the barrel... i want the barrel re-blued but the gunsmith wants $150 to reblue the gun and i don't want to spend that kind of money on the gun .. i have done my research and have seen some kits that are available .. some people say they work and some say they don't i don't need the gun to be perfect but i want it to look decent any body know anything about the kits ? ? ?
My take on it is that you merely have a cosmetic issue with the rifle. As long as it does not rust further, you are fine. Ask yourself if you can really justify spending $150 to reblue a rifle barrel, for a rifle that's maybe only worth $350 on the used market.
Then, ask yourself if you want to risk screwing-up your rifle barrel by attempting to reblue it yourself.
I take good care of my guns, but I have bought a few clunkers over the years that had some worn bluing. I just leave them alone and enjoy the nice patina that the metal has. In some ways, it adds a touch of class to the older guns.
