i seen a lot of pics where Russian German and Japanese lieutenants, officers and commanders had on their pistol grip a hole for string attachment and the string would connect to the holster.
i mean what was the point of this? was it just to not be able to loose your gun? or did it have more meaning to it?
Allied pistols had the same option for a lanyard.
What everyone has said, ie not losing the pistol, is correct. It's really helpful if you're switching from reading a map, to using a compass (the more metal near you, the greater the distortion when reading the compass), to pointing out planned movements. A pistol might be left to dangle, though it would usually be holstered.
The lanyard also meant it was harder for an enemy to disarm you.
The lanyard was also effectively a badge of rank, which explains why mean people with pistol did not wear them. Because it was more likely an officer's weapon, a silhouette which showed you wearing a lanyard might make you a sniper target.
In the Vietnam War period, Aust soldiers (and US I believe) wore similar combat greens and, as dress uniform in non-combat areas, also wore a lanyard which was colour coded to indicate their Corps or specifiality eg white= artillery, red = infantry.
PS although a gun is technically a title given to an MG, it is better reserved for wheeled artillery. Otherwise, it's a rifle, SMG or similar.
