What are some ideas on how to "finish" a wax mold?

For an art project, I have a plaster mold formed from a lemon and am going to put wax into the mold. The mold will not be filled completely to form a solid shape. Instead, a controlled amount of wax will be poured in and the mold will be "rolled" so that the wax forms a hollow shell of a lemon.

The place where the wax is poured in will leave a small "nipple" that is a small opening.

My question: What are some ideas of how to melt or remove that small piece, and how can the remaining hole be filled in or smoothed over to make a completely solid outer shell?

I have considered glue guns (without the glue), soldering pencils, torches (not really an option), etc. This is for a classroom so think of something that would be somewhat safe for schools.

Depending on your definition of safe, a thin metal spatula and an alcohol lamp is the traditional method of working wax. http://users.ticnet.com/mikefirth/castgobl.htm#WAXTOOLS or as you can see on that link, a soldering iron with a flat tip plugged into a dimmer unit to turn down the temp. I used an iron that takes rod tips held by a set screw and made a new tip by sawing a slot in the end of a brass rod and adding a flat brass sheet about 1/4" wide.
In either case, practice on other stuff so you can see the result of various temps. Can be used for welding, cutting, smoothing and sculpting wax.
