mammoth bones as artifacts images where?
Hello I'm looking for info about and images of mammoth and other megafauna bones being used or shaped into artifacts ... not just bones used for tents or huts or carvings or knives but bones used for more domestic things like bowls or scoops or containers.
An initial search reveals a long list of possibilities.
If some one lurking is a expert and can narrow down my search by recommneding the best sites that would be a great help as due to other projects I have limited time for searches at the moment.
I'm working on an idea that the reduction of bone resources from megafauna may have contributed to the development of pottery?
Thanks in advance for any time saving tips!
Quite a few mammoth ivory objects have been found in graves attributed to the upper palaeolithic culture known as the Gravettian. For instance there were remains of mammoth ivory rods and rings found in the grave of the so called 'Red Lady' of Paviland. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Lady_of_Paviland ). You could try doing a google search for 'gravettian burials' for more information.
However I must confess that I am a little bit sceptical about your theory that a lack of bone resources may have led to the development of pottery. You have to remember that a lot of utensils can be made with other organics - wood, leather, birch-bark, etc - and these raw materials were probably never in short supply.
