I bought a new leather knife sheath for my knife. The only problem is that the knife is basically stuck in there and I have to use two hands and quite a bit of pulling to get it out. How can I soften it up/break it in so the knife will be smooth in taking out? Thanks everybody!
I'd fix this in two steps. First soak the sheath in water, wrap the blade with some plastic wrap and put it back in the sheath. Mold the wet leather around the blade (the plastic wrap is to keep it dry and unrusted) and let it dry almost completely. Don't heat it, just let it dry in normal temperature.
When it's almost dry use some saddle soap and rub it into the leather to make it softer. Finally, when it's dry, dust the inside of the sheath with powdered graphic (often sold to lube locks) and work the knife in and out. It will help make the sheath more "slippery" and allow the blade to come out easier.
