How good could Zsolt Erdei be if his manager would have him fight the best in the Light Heavyweight division?
There is a good article about Erdei in the September 2008 issue of The Ring Magazine which states, "The irritating thing about the way Germany-based Hungarian light heavyweight Erdei is being protected is that he's actually a pretty good boxer." And it went on to state, "Erdei is 33 years old; it's not too late to start trying to book him fights that mean something. It's not too late for him to find out how good he really is, to challenge himself, to show the world he's more than just a protected paper champion." So far, he is undefeated but facing relatively light opposition, clubfighters flown in from America to pad his record (his current won-loss record is 30-0). So how would Erdei fare in the ring against Bernard Hopkins, Glen Johnson, Antonio Tarver, and Roy Jones Jr.?
Zsolt Erdei had a great amateur and olympic career for Hungary. His defeat of Julio Cesar Gonzalez was spectacular and he was able to defend his WBO lightheavyweight champion 11 times. With a career of 30-0, he was definitely a good fighter. Overshadowed by the great Laszlo Papp, it seemed that Erdei was focus on maintaining his perfect record but since then when he stated he is not getting any younger, he is looking for a challenge and has publicly stated that he doesnt mind fighting Roy Jones Jr. or Antonio Tarver.
Erdei is a very talented fighter but his lack of excitement in the ring is what makes him less marketable, hence, many elite fighters refuses to fight him. His German based camp has not done a good job promoting him, eventhough I do feel that Erdei is very talented and has a shot at Antonio Tarver and maybe even against Roy jones jr. Tavoris Cloud and Jene Pascal are tailor made for Erdei. I dont quite think, however, that he can beat Hopkins, Chad Dawson, or Glen Johnson. Many people have claimed that Erdei is similar to Sven Ottke or Joe Calzaghe, boxers who are trying to save their legacy by fighting bums and retiring undefeated. Ergei is just misunderstood and badly promoted.
