Ballistic vest,Plate carrier?
Hey guys,I need help choosing a vest.I work armed security(site security, patrol, and infastructure)My price range is 500.00(not including rifle plates/soft armor) and down.I'm leaning towards the plate carriers. Will I be shot at with a rifle?Probably not, but I am willing to sacrifice weight and comfort for peace of mind.I have been looking at the Blackhawk! cutaway vest w/cumberbund.Design your own accessories setup sounds great with the MOLLE gear.Does it allow a rifle plate for the back?I'm 6'2 and a slim not skinny 180lb build. What would you recommend? If you are LE/Military what do you use?I understand I dont need a Fully accessorized forced entry suit but I wish to have something that can take multiple hits.As you already know AKs' are readily available and shoots a hard hitting round.Am I going overboard?Any opinions, suggestions professional or otherwise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys,be safe.
Sorry, this should have been posted in LE
It sounds to me like you just need a good threat level 3 vest. Concealable is going to be way more comfortable than any over vest. The plate carrier is going to give you rifle protection, but unless you wear soft armor with it you are going to have gaps where you will be vulnerable to pistol rounds. Plates usually only give you about a square foot in front of your chest and back. The concealable threat level three vest will give you a "wrap-around' type wear that will protect your rib area. The plate carrier will not protect this area unless you add soft armor. You can get a good vest for around $300 and believe it or not there are companies on ebay that sell good ones for that price. If you are not comfortable buying from ebay companies TA MIAMI ARMOR sells good vests for around $400-$500. What I would do if I were you would be to buy a good threat level 3 concealable vest for your duty work. Later on when you save some more money and if you still think you need rifle protection buy you a slip over plate carrier with some plates. I wore a threat level 2 soft armor vest with a PROUD RAV vest with SAPI plates. I would not recommend this unless you are at serious risk of getting shot with a rifle b/c they are heavy and uncomfortable especially for most civilian LE work. If you decide to go plate carrier get proud, blackhawk,or eagle. I hope this helps.
