Looking for a good used "wilderness" vehicle...need suggestions?
The Jeep Cherokee I bought for $500 over a year ago is no longer up to the punishment of towing my trailer (2500 pounds) through steep areas. It's got 253K miles on it and may have tranny issues. I need to replace it with something.
I need an SUV or Pick up truck with 4X4, fairly short wheel base, capable of towing at least 3500 pounds.
Most of my camping type travel is in the Nevada desert and mountain regions. Lots of off pavement running. I haul quite a bit of gear in my trailer since I also do mineral prospecting as well as wildlife photography.
Looking at used since I only have about $5,000 to spend and don't want payments.
So far I am thinking Durango, Bronco, Cherokee, Ranger.
Any other suggestions? Experiences with off road vehicles that you like?
I have a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer with the 5.0 liter V-8 AWD. I know it sounds like an older vehicle but the main reason I keep it around is it's towing ability.
I routinely tow cars around with it on either a tow dolly or 1 car trailer. The stability is better then my old Tahoe, and the gas mileage is better as well. My truck has 245k on it and besides a couple of minor issues, it is better then I could have ever expected.
You could find one of these easy for under $3k. I would not go with the Explorer version though because they seem to be built cheaper (my opinion).
