Anyone own a Mosin Nagant rifle?
Just how accurate is this rifle? I have heard that it is very inaccurate to moderatley accurate to it was used as a sniper rifle in WWII. My question is, is it really worth buying one for about $100 and using it with a scope or should I just invest in another rifle for longer distance shots.
it is "military accurate" but by no means a Competition rifle. I own some of them. They are fun to shoot, rugged as a boat anchor but do have some shortcomings. First, the safety is atrocious. Most people prefer to carry them with an empty chamber, rather than trying to manipulate the very strong safety. Next, to install a scope properly, you have to purchase the kit to cut the straight bolt, drill and tap it and reinstall the bent bolt so that it clears the scope. then you have to drill and tap the receiver for the Scope bases. If you have done this kind of stuff before, it isn't all that hard, but if you have no experience, better pay to have a gunsmith do it rather than run a rifle. But they shoot Pretty darn good with open sights. Surplus ammo is cheap, but hunting ammo is comparable to most hunting cartridges.
A local gun shop here is running a special on them, you buy the arsenal refinished rifle, with bayonet, sling, oiler, and tools, plus 400 rounds of surplus ammo in a sealed can, all for $125.00 plus tax. They are excellent for a "survival" gun that you can stash at your cabin etc and the caliber 7.62x54R is close enough to the U.S. 30-06 to show that it is acceptable for harvesting anything up to the big bears of alaska, and in a pinch would work for them if you know what you are doing.
Shoot safe
