Chickens are Picking on the new girl!! What can I do?
We lost one of our 6 chooks (all bought together) and have just added another to the hen house.
She is the same breed, but slightly younger and the poor thing is being pecked and bossed around by the old girls ...
She is just staying in the hen house and when she comes out to eat they chase her away.
Will this last? Will they become mates eventually?
Is there anything I can do?
Would getting another one boosting the numbers of new arrivals help?
Thanks in advance.
Anytime a chicken is added or taken away from the group they have to re-establish the pecking order. That is why you should try to keep this to a minimum. If you want to get a handful of new chickens you're best off adding them all at once instead of one at a time. It will take them a few weeks but then things will settle down. I had a rooster who was particularly hard on my younger birds, he almost killed a couple of them. I finally had to get rid of him and now all the other birds get along fine. Give them some time to get used to each other and keep an eye on them to make sure they are not causing any serious injury.
