Is the Bushmaster AR-15 a good weapon for defending my home?
I am buying my first gun today, it will be a Bushmaster AR-15 with picatinny rails, plus forward grip, and a tactical sling. If I was to fight 2 or 3 intruders or thieves within my home, would this weapon give me the edge, over 3 thieves or criminals with only handguns?
Important Detail :
I have Dragonskin body armor at home already.
My parents wanted me to buy a Glock or a little .38 revolver. They are not happy with my decision. They are terrified of AR-15's, they look scary to them. But I would rather have higher firepower, than equal or less to any intruder.
AR-15 is a great rifle... however, rifles are not ideal for home protection... a handgun is much better suited for home protection because chance are you're not looking to just "scare" them away with a cool looking gun... or fumbling around with an awkward rifle and some body armor.
As for power... well most AR's are chambered in a .223 cal, which is not really superior to oh lets say a .45cal. at least as far as close quarter confrontational stopping power.
If you shoot an intruder with a rifle round... you better hope you never miss... as chance are that round did not stop in your wall, rather through your wall and into your neighbors home as well.
Take the AR-15 to the range, get a handgun, or a shotgun for the house dude... .380, 9MM, .38 are all great for home protection, and not too big to handle... even a .40-.45 would be better than a rifle.
As for your "body armor" unless you sleep in it (a bit weird) reality does not associate the time needed to suit one up with home defense. If someone comes into my home, and threatens my family's safety, I would not be worried about playing army... rather taking out their knee-caps with my .45 quick and in a hurry.
- Good Luck!
