Questions about sidelock muzzleloader?
First, am I forgetting anything? #11 caps, powder substitute and measure, bullets, homemade cleaning kit.
How much do we need a bullet starter? My grandfather swears there's one in the kit he's already given me (there isn't) and though it looks simple enough to make, he and my cousin might want to go out this afternoon before it rains to fire this thing up, and I don't have time to make one this afternoon.
Also, if I normally shoot left-handed but the lock is on the right side (of course), is it a good idea to fire this gun right-handed instead?
Most likely you will need a device called a short starter to start the ball down the muzzle. A proper ball/patch fit is pretty tight and needs help in getting it started. You will need some kind of lube for the patches and you will need some patches. Pillow ticking makes very good patching and you can get by using Crisco for lube. Some people just keep the patch for the next shot tucked in their mouth to get it wet with spit. Spit has been used for years as a patch lube and some people swear that they get better accuracy with it. My preference is a product called Bore Butter.
You can shoot a right handed muzzleloader left handed but it puts the cap right in front of your face when it goes off. Some folks find that to be a distraction. If it doesn't bother you, then it is not a problem. However, two things you MUST have are proper hearing protection and proper eye protection. Those caps are made with a thin foil cup and when the cap goes off, often tiny bits of the foil go flying and if one hit your eye, you could end up with some serious damage to your eye. Go to your local Wal-Mart and get a pair of safety shooting glasses in the sporting goods dept. They are not at all expensive ($5 to $7). Pick up some ear plugs while you are at it. If you decide not to use either of these, you are making a VERY stupid mistake.
Have fun but do it SAFELY. Muzzleloading is a great sport. To have even more fun, join The National Muzzleloading Rifle Association. You can get info at www.nmlra.com
