I got to a friends home and in the rifle rack you find an airsoft toy, you find several air rifles and 22's, a 308 bolt action and a 12 gauge pump shotgun. No locks on anything. Ammo stored with guns.
On the table are two pistols. One is airsoft, the other is a 38 special revolver. It isn't loaded, but I watch a 11 year old spin the cylinder, point it at a 6 year olds head and pull the trigger.
A disaster waiting to happen! Everything I own including ammo fits in my Stack-On 19 gun safe. Everything in that safe has a trigger lock on it, including pellet guns.
I think the child was learning the 38 special revolver is sort of a toy to be played with.
How secure are you. Do you leave things out in the open for kids, before you say your kid has been taught, has you kid NEVER done something wrong? Why would you leave guns around or mix them with toys?
I think you may have inadvertently posted this question in the wrong category because most users in the Adolescent section are not even old enough to purchase a gun, but I'll answer the question nevertheless.
Personally, I am an advocate of much stricter gun laws and am opposed to civilians possessing firearms, but I understand that in the US people do have the right to bear arms. They also have a moral and legal obligation to protect children from potential harm to themselves and others, and your friend's appalling failure to do so constitutes reckless endangerment. You are right that a child could easily confuse the real gun for a toy one, and even a kid that has been educated about gun safety may still not fully understand the consequences. A woman from my church recently spoke about her nephew finding a gun hidden inside a stereo speaker while playing at a friend's house, and the other boy accidentally shooting and killing him. Children are curious by nature, and accidents can happen in seconds. It's just by the grace of God that nothing has happened to your friend's children. You should speak with him about your concerns. He may think you are being intrusive, but considering the stakes it's a conversation you need to have. If he still fails to lock the guns and ammunition away, please call CPS and inform them of the situation. You may lose your friend by doing so, but hopefully you'll prevent a potential tragedy.
And as for my family, we have no guns in the houses. My grandfather had a collection of antique guns in his study, but he kept them unloaded and in a locked cabinet, and the room was off-limits to us.
