Best Model AR-15 To Own?
What the title says. Basic use is going to be target practice/fun shoots/hunting every one in great while. I dont plan on doing any crazy upgrades to it outside a good optic or maybe new iron sights.
I have a little over 9 years experience with rifles and shotguns and I recently got rid of all my guns and have really been missing those weekend shoots with friends/family. I was looking at the Bushmaster AR-15 A3(I would prefer the upper receiver to have a picatinny rail for sights), and that gun seems to run a reasonable 850-1100, about the max I am willing to spend. I also prefer the 20 inch barrel and solid stock apposed to the M4-class variant.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
This is a difficult question to answer, only because there are so many good AR-15 manufacturers these days. Sounds like you know what you want, a flat top A3 with 20" barrel...nothing wrong with Bushmaster, you can also go Rock River Arms, Stag Arms, or DPMS, etc. So long as you aren't getting something that just screams a warning because it's so much cheaper than the norm.
I understand the appeal of the outline of the "old" black rifle with fixed stock and long barrel. Do not dismiss collapsable stocks because of what you see on the mil-spec M4. Barrel length and the type of stock you choose have absolutely nothing to do with one another.
Take a look at the stocks available from VLTOR and Magpul before you rule out the collapsable stock. My VLTOR EMOD stock has a much better cheek weld than the standard A2 style stock, and having a 5 or 6 position stock gives you lots of options to adjust the rifle's length of pull. I would say the Magpul CTR or ACS are also superior to the old A2 fixed stock in usefulness and cheek weld.
Do some research on at the various vendor websites and browse the forums a bit. The sheer number of options for personalizing this simple platform is amazing. Keep your rifle's bolt carrier group well lubed, use brass cased ammo, and enjoy. Welcome to a whole new addiction!
