I am planning on cutting off about 3 inches from the butt-end my Ithaca model 37 gunstock where it has been broken. I don't have the piece that was broken off as it was handed down to me from my father, which was given to him by my grandfather. My plan is to cut off most of the broken end then put a grindable recoil pad on the back of it to make up a little for the length I'll be missing after I cut it.

The retaining bolt is out of the way. Matter of fact, I'm going to have to buy a long shafted screw driver just so I can reach the bolt head to take the stock off.
I have looked into buying a new stock, and they are around 150 bucks. I thought I'd try fixing the old one first and if that didn't work I will buy a new one. Thanks for your help.
I'm with deadliest mushroom, look for the retaining bolt by taking the stock off before cutting. I would also stick with a fine toothed blade, cut as little as possible, and then finish it up with a sander.
On the other hand one of my favorite shotguns is a handmedown from my grandpa with a huge chip in the stock. It still functions just fine and I think it gives the gun some character so I leave it there.
