Comparing using army gear to store bought gear...?
What would be better to use army gear or picking up new backpacking gear from the sporting good store and why? My friend comes from a military family and her dad emailed her from over seas and said she could have what ever she wanted from his old army stuff. Out side of the combat, did the soldiers in Vietnam not survive using army gear? You figure that backpacking in Canada would be a hole lot better than Vietnam. Someone was saying we should carry a rifle; the only rifle I could get is my friends uncle's ar15; now i am not sure but taking that backpacking in Canada wouldn't that cause alot of problums?
I believe I responded to your other thread as well. I still think it's a bad idea for 2 females to backpack in northern Canada alone, off trail, with little to no backpacking experience.
HOWEVER: Here's something to consider about using his military gear. Backpacks are sized for the person who is intending to carry them. Unless your friend's dad is similar in height, torso length, etc. to you, you may find that military pack mighty uncomfortable.
If you still think you can handle it, get your hands on it at least 6 weeks prior to your trip. Pack it up, and start hiking with it fully loaded. Make sure you wear the shoes you intend to hike in, and cover similar terrain that you will be hiking in.
Start with short distances, and work your way up to the daily mileage that you expect to cover on your backpacking trip.
Good luck, and when you go, pack bear spray and a bear sling to hang your food. Make sure and read up on how to hang it appropriately too.
