I grew up around hunters and used to target shoot using mostly .22 rifles or handguns. I'd like to buy a multipurpose weapon. Possibly a handgun or a shotgun like this:
Something for protection, target practice, and maybe hunting if I decide or have to. Any suggestions?
Also interested in Glock G17 or19.
I think you are on the right path choosing a shotgun, and mossberg is a fine choice. I'd also consider a remington 870 express.
However, I'd get a standard "field" 500 in black synthetic, and then purchase an aftermarket 18 or 20 inch barrel, that will go much further toward your goal of a target, hunt, and defense weapon. Put the long barrel on for hunting and busting clays, put the short barrel on and leave it in the closet for home defense. I do see mossberg lists a "field/home defense" combo that includes the 28 incher and the 18 incher, but it is only avaiable in wood stock, I don't know if that matters to you
Or, there are combo packs that include a 26" bird barrel and a shorter barrel with rifle sights for deer hunting with slugs, that would also make a good self defense weapon. Sure, a 20" barrel is going to be a bit handier than a 24", but rifle sights are nice. Contrary to popular myth, you DO have to aim a shotgun, the pattern it throws is really only an inch wide per yard it travels, and inside a home, how many spots do you have longer than 10 yards?
Depending on how experienced you are with shotguns, I've got to say the 12 gauge can really recoil, you might want to consider a 20 gauge, it is still one hell of a potent gun.
Contrary to Southwhatever's idea, a shotgun in 12 or 20 is a much much more potent weapon than a handgun. Unless somethign like the need to store it in the nightstand exists, I'd always suggest a good shotgun for home defense. Of course, getting both a shotgun and a handgun would be okay!
