Recently bought an old "poster" at a crafts fair. It is on canvas and has a layer of protective resin (oilcloth). However, over the years, it has been exposed to significant surface grime / grease.
Am a little worried about using typical commercial cleaning product. Is there a good cleaning product that is gentle / safe enough for use on art?
I would start VERY cautiously. Wet a soft cloth with plain tepid water, wring it out well, and wipe gently in a less significant part of the poster. See what comes off. If you get anything, rinse the cloth and repeat, working your way around the surface. Watch for signs that the paper is getting damp, because that can ruin your poster. If you think there's still more gunk that should come off, add a little baking soda to a bowl of tepid water and repeat the process. If you have very stubborn spots, spray a little window cleaner on your cloth and rub gently. Finish with a wipedown with tepid water.
