hunters, i have a question?
i havent been able to go to the range a lot lately, so i was thinking about getting an airsoft gun and using scaled down targets for shooting at 1-2 yards, has anyone else here considered doing this, i have looked into reloading with wax bullets and no powder but there are other people in the house so i dont think that this would be entirely safe
also i looked at airsoft guns and i have never seen so many tacticooled pistols and desert eagles, it is actually painful to look at
@zchris87v: i wasnt planning on getting an expensive one, i was thinking about a ~$25 one, also i already do dry fire practice, i was just thinking about doing something more
So Kush, it depends on what exactly you want to practice doing? As it turns out, LOTS of very good competitive shooters practice with airsoft. You can get pistols which are excellent simulators for a real firearm and so learning fast trigger control, movement with a firearm, maintaining front sight concentration during target transitions and a bunch of other stuff they work great for.
Now there are some things they are not much good for - the discipline around distance shooting for example. It certainly is the case that the light ball, lack of rifling and such make even the best of them not terribly accurate past about 6 or 7 yards. Lower quality guns probably even less than that. So, if that's what you want to practice, then probably not a great choice. For that, you might want to consider getting a lower powered pellet rifle - they can still be quite accurate and can provide useful backyard practice.
However, if you want to practice fast target acquisition - meaning getting from low ready to shoulder on target and firing - you can definately find something that will work for you in the airsoft world.
