I just inherited some rifles and I'm thinking about going deer hunting this fall, but I'd like to know what I should use. I've got a 30-30, a 45-70, a 38-55, a 30-06, and I was wondering if someone could tell me what all those numbers stood for and also which would be the best gun to go deer hunting with. I've got two 30-30's, one which has a scope, and I'd prefer to use one of those. Also I was wondering if I should use the one with the scope on it or if it's ok just to use the sight, without a scope, while going deer hunting. I've always hunted deer w/ a 12 gauge so I'm not used to rifle hunting.
No, the 45-70 is fine for deer with the right rounds. Mississippi allows you to use one during primitive weapons season, and I think my state (Louisiana) does too. But I rarely hunt that season. My brother and dad go at it full force though, and have killed a few with the 45-70. If you go to your gun store, they could tell you which available rounds are best for deer.
I'd personally get a good scope on that 30-06 and use it for most of my hunting (with Hornady ballistic tip ammo or similar). I killed a nice 8pt buck the last time I went hunting, and he didn't so much as flinch. With the 30-30, I've had even small does run 100+yds even with heart/lung shots. I really only use a 30-30 for stalking in thick brushy areas where a close range shot is the only option, and my 30-06 is just too unwieldy.
With good rounds, and some experience, you can make awesome shots with the 30-06. My best kill shot was at over 600yds with it. We measured it with a top-of-the-line range finder (not a "redneck guesstimate", lol). That's the farthest I've ever seen a deer from, and it was on a pipeline. Here in Louisiana and Mississippi, we don't have much for open spaces/fields. And deer avoid them where we do. We've got lot's and lot's of hunters, so they're pretty wised up to the game. Up north, it's much easier and the deer are more plentiful.
