Breastfeeding a preemie?
My daughter was born june5th. Since then i have been pumping everyday and making sure she has enough milk to not need formula. Up until yesterday she was fed with a bottle. I finally got to try putting her to breast but she wasnt hungry at that time. So today i got to take her home and tried again. She latched on pretty good and was drinking but only for 10 minutes. In the hospital they said she could drink about 50cc. I know she didnt get that much while i was breastfeeding her so im wondeing if its ok that shell only drink 10minutes each feeding? Ive only fed her twice since shes been home...but im worried shes not getting enough. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. thank you
My son was a 30 weeker and I was told not to even bother nursing him until 34 weeks. When I was kangarooing him, he tried to move to the breast so I let him. He was only 32 weeks, but he latched on and took 17cc from me. From then on, we put him to the breast first at feeding time, he got as much as he wanted, and then he was tube fed the rest of what he needed. How preemie is your baby? I would think that if she is hungry, she will tell you. Otherwise, go with the three hour method. Feed her every three hours. 10 minutes is not bad by any means. Depending on how strong your letdown is, she may be getting that 50cc in ten minutes. You would be really surprised. The night before I got to take my son home, he nursed from me for 13 minutes and took 73cc. (We weighed him before and after every time he nursed). Rest assured that most of the time, a baby will always get as much as they need from Mama. If she is only nursing for 10 minutes on one side, try burping her and offering the other side. The change of position helped my son. Good luck to you, congratulations on your new baby girl, and feel free to email or im me if you need any other tips!
