I don't know too much about guns and this is one of the questions I have. Which one is stronger?, Which one is better for hunting? Which one is most likely to make a one shot kill?
Which one would do better if you had to defend your self against a massive 1000lbs brown bear.
There are many times of shotguns and many types of rifles.
Shotguns shoot many small projectiles all at once, although they can also fire a single large projectile. All shotguns fire the projectiles at roughly the same speed. The biggest shotgun in common usage is 10 gauge but it is kind of rare, second biggest and most popular is 12 guage, it is what most people think of when they say shotgun. Then there is 16guage, 20 guage, 28 guage, and way down at the smallest end, .410, which isn't even a gauge any more but would be 48 gauge if that is how it was named.
Rifles fire a single projectile, much smaller than the size of the shotgun. You can have a big slow projectile or a small fast projectile, so it is a bit harder to compare.
now, compare the average military assault style rifle to a 12 guage shotgun, the shotgun is more powerful by a large margin, but it's slow innacurate slug prevents good use at long ranges.
compare the average deer and elk hunting rifle ( the 30-06) to a 12 guage shotgun, again the shotgun has more power, but not by as big of a margin. And again, the shotgun is a short ranged weapon.
now, move up to dangerous game rifles, like for lions and bear and cape buffalo, the famous .375 H&H or the 416 rigby, now, they are indeed more powerful than a 12 guage...at all ranges.
