Has any one ever herd of sighting your rifle in at 3 inches high at 39yds. for it to be right on at 200 yards?
I got a new scope, I shoot Hornady Custom 308 150gr. sst 2,820 fps. My rifle scope said to sight it in at 200 yards. Where I live I only have about 40 yards I can shoot. Where I hunt I have 500 yards I can shoot. My buddy said you can hold 3 inches over the bulls eye at 39 yards and it will make it rite on the money at 200 yards. I want to know if any one else has herd this or knows it to be a fact. I'm still going to sight it in latter this year when I get to my hunting spot latter this year. I just want to get it close for now. Thank you for all answers.

Hunting centerfire rifles are generally sighted in at 100 yards. Then the shooter now turned hunter sneaks stealthily to as near that range to make his or her kill shot...With another skill it has acquired and that is shooting at all ranges with hunting loads to know how much lower or higher to set scope retical at closer and farther ranges on the soon to be many meals.
Another way to set sights is called a "point blank range set up" which works kinda sorta like what you are planning to do although the range is farther. Basically, you sight in rifle for the farthest range your cartridge still has enough killing power to do it's job. And there is a zone where you can set your scope retical to say the heart or backbone and expect to make a good hit.
Another is to sight in at a set range and make shots and kills from that range.
And still another us to buy a scope with a "ballistic reticule" which you sight in at 100 yards exactly on the bullseye. You then range your target and set intended target on the lower portion of the scope retical for ranges father than 100 yards.
And do not bother to "get scope close for now" as this is a waste of time and bullets and effort. Wait until you can go to a decent range to sight in your firearm.
