How does 7.62 x 39 perform on whitetail deer?
I've heard of some people successfully harvesting whitetail deer with scoped SKS rifles which happen to shoot the 7.62 x 39mm round. There is even soft point/balllistic tip hunting ammo available in the 7.62 x 39mm. I am being offered a 7.62 x 39mm AR-15 upper assembly with 20 inch barrel for sale, I am thinking about putting it on top of a complete AR-15 lower assembly that I already own. It is a flattop and a scope can be easily mounted on top of it.
I was studying the ballistics of the 7.62 x 39mm round and it flies at 2,400 fps when fired out of a 16.3 inch barrel, but this upper assembly that I'm planning to buy has a 20 inch barrel, which means a higher gas pressure, which equals a higher velocity of 2,550 fps. I have never shot a whitetail deer with 7.62 x 39 ammunition before, I am wondering if you have done it or heard about a hunter harvesting one with this caliber? Does it work?
The 7.62 X 39 ballistics are almost identical to the .30-30 and that round has harvested more game than all others combined. I shoot a mini-30 and have taken three large mule deer. five white tail deer, and one prong horn antelope. All one shot kills. I have also shot probably 100 coyotes with it.
Edit 1; Who really uses factory loads to hunt????? I do not think I have shot any factory loads except for my hoarded Mil Surplus in fifteen years in center fire rifle ammo, and it has been a darn sight longer than that for pistol rounds. Back before I got married I figured out if I bought a box of primers it cost me about 6 cents each If I bought three cases of them I got enough of a discount that a primer cost me less than 1 cent. So I ordered my reloading supplies by the 10000 round lots. When you start buying like then every once in a while someone will offer you a chance at odd lots and then you can get stuff in 50000 round lots for what the 10000 round lots cost. Now I think I could probably reload about a half million rounds from what is in the safe.
