Why Do Atheists Leave Out Parts of The Story?
I always here Atheists saying that if it wasn't form Christianity (Catholicism to be exact) the Dark Ages wouldn't have happened. I personally believe they should thank the Catholics (I'm not Catholic).
I know that Atheists have a programmed response to bring up the Crusades, but I'm not Catholic and don't follow their religion so the Crusades has nothing to do with actual Christianity. Please
After the dark ages, science started pursuing ways to kill people better. Fully automatic weapons, tanks, fighter jets, and nuclear bombs. The "smarter" we claim to get, the more devastating our weapons become. When atheists boast about how science has helped us do this or that, why don't they ever mention how many people have been killed in the pursuit of scientific advancement? When they boast about the refrigerator, air condition, cars, etc. Why don't they boast about how many atomic weapons they help put on earth?
Absolutely brilliant question...except for the spelling and grammatical errors...and the historical mistake about Catholicism and the Crusades...and the failure to identify Catholicism as Christianity.
Look, it has nothing to do really with religion or atheism. You're onto a very deep point about human intelligence. Let me help you extend it a little. I've been maintaining for several years now that we humans have actually crossed the point at which our high intelligence is conducive of species survival...and that it has become conducive to species extinction instead.
You summed it up beautifully when you said, "The 'smarter' we claim to get, the more devastating our weapons become." But, actually, we Homo Sapiens haven't really become any "smarter" over the thousands of years we've been on the planet. We've just used our intelligence to create tools which allow us to better use the basic level of intelligence we've always had...tools like written language, telescopes, metallurgy, mathematics, computers, explosives, etc..
What I'm getting at is this: High intelligence in a top predator looks to be an evolutionary dead end. We humans are "top predators" who live socially in groups with leadership structures arranged according to power hierarchies. That is, a few very tough individuals at the top control the entire social pyramid. Naturally, different social groups, or "tribes," will fight with one another for territory, mates, and resources, while within each tribe, individuals will "compete" for the power to get to the top of the pyramid.
Under such an arrangement, the point is eventually reached when the intersection of high intelligence with man's innate aggressiveness and competitiveness produces weapons so powerful that they are capable of destroying all human life on the planet. And that's the point we're now at. It matters very little whether religious disputes or other ideological disputes, such as the dispute over whether Capitalism or Communism is the better way of life, form the motivations for the coming nuclear wars. The plain fact is that if we, the entire human species, allows massive nuclear exchanges to take place, most of humanity will be destroyed very quickly and the survivors will very soon find themselves living in a "nuclear Winter" situation and millions more will die of disease, starvation, and exposure.
So, my position is the same as yours, although I may have carried it a little farther in terms of explanation. Extremely high intelligence in a top predator species is an unavoidable death sentence for the species as a whole. Or, put a little differently, Extremely high intelligence in a top predator species is a limiting factor on the life expectancy of that species. Such species are doomed to have exciting, but very short-term stays on any planet...unlike, say, the crocs, who have been around for about 160 million years.
So, stay with this idea, my man. You've got a good mind and a sharp and highly accurate outlook on our species.
Oh, and one more thing...no religion can save our species, since religion just becomes one more thing to fight over.
