How to survive in very cold temperatures?
Well i have to make a guide to survive in the yukon territory for english class and i'm having trouble coming up with a equipment and supplies list. For equipment i have a compass and medical kit, what other things would i need. I know i still need a fire starter (what is foolproof in - temp?), knife, and clothing still.
I know up here in northern ohio, you want to wear layered clothing so you don't build up sweat. Would that apply to -40 weather though?
Why liquor? what would you use it for. I'll put it on the list if you explain how it would be useful? Just to help cope with the cold?
Here, in Norway, we have ten rules for mountain skiing. One is: "Bury yourself in good time!"
If you are surprised by bad weather in the mountains, you won't find your way in the blizzard and there is only one thing to do: Make a hole, go down in it and wait until it gets better. That's why the standard equipment includes a folding light shovel.
Digging the hole is, in fact, preferably done on the side of a snow pile, along a slope. You should also make a shelf somewhat higher than the ground itself because cold air sinks and you want to stay as warm as possible, on the shelf.
During the winter 1942-43, the Norwegian resistance fighter Claus Helberg went down in the valley to get a battery they were using, in the mountains, to keep contact with London. He was caught in a snow storm and spent the night in a snow hole with his battery that was leaking acid on his clothes. At the time, the only thing they had to eat was lichen found under the snow and, at rare occasion, wild reindeers they shot and ate entirely, with the stomach and its content.
Yet, on the 28th of February 43, they attacked and destroyed the heavy water factory at Rjukan, thus disabling Germany to get what was needed to make a Nazi atomic bomb.
This true story was told in the Holywood movie: "The Heroes of Telemark" starring Kirk Douglas.
