What is "slop?" and why would it make a gun more reliable?
I am really cheap. I like to spend my money wisely. One way is I buy used guns. I needed a gun for home defense (I moved into a bad neighborhood). So this guy who lost his job was willing to sell me an old gun with some ammo really cheap.
The gun was made in Spain. It is a Star Model "B" in .38 Super. From the box it came in, I think the guy's Dad bought it in the 60's or 70's. Anyway, it is extremely reliable. It hasn't jammed yet, with any of the clips. Full metal jacket or hollowpont, no difference. It doesn't jam. Not too bad for a $150 dollar pistol.
I once mentioned to the rangemaster that my gun was very reliable and never jammed. He laughed. He said "Of course not. Your gun was made with a lot of "slop," in the parts."
What would that translate into, in normal American English? I have never heard of the term "slop." Does it refer to a type of steel or something?

All things are relative in firearms - there is no 'free lunch'.
To make a pistol more accurate - you need to spend $$ to increase the toleances of the manufacturing equipment and more $$ fitting the parts. Since we cannot change the fact that byproducts of firing a pistol are power residue, oils, lead, copper and brass particles that can cause jamming - the trade off for accuracy is reliability and cost.
You want a reliable CCW 1911 45 pistol? Get a standard grade 'battle rattle' pistol. You want a 1911 that will always hit the black and never come close to the white zone of your target - you buy a Colt National Match Gold Cup or a nice Kimber.
Throw that Kimer or Gold Cup into a Galco Shoulder rig and use it for CCW - one tiny piece of belly button lint and they will jam. What will jam a Kimber or Gold Cup is just another day at the beach for a standard grade pistol.
It all depends on your application. Ask a dedicated target shooter - and he will tell you the standard grade models are for loosers. Where as your cop buddy who's been on the force for 15 years will tell you there is no reason to own a fancy shmancy Kimber or Gold Cup unless you are a Yuppie or idiot. And the thug down the streed doesn't care so long as he can cap some guy with your stolen gun.
