Is the Rem m700 SS w/ 5-r 24'' best for me?
Hi, I am a US Army Cavalry Scout in training for long range marksmanship and target acquisition. The military uses m24 and m40 series rifles which are military spec rifles of the remington 700. I am interested in buying a m700 stainless steel with the mil spec 24inch barrel with the same 11.25 twist as the issued m24 for 1100$ dollars from a local gun store, new. There are allot of other rifles from the remington 700 series to choose from for cheaper. Would it be worth spending the extra 500 dollars for this rifle, the m700 ss 5r or would some other remington model suffice for my training needs. My goal is to gain familiarization in handling and firing a weapon system as close to the m24 as I can.
Since (1) I've been shooting 700's since my early teens and (2) each individual rifle will take a little getting used to, if it were me, I wouldn't bother at all. The shooting with the M24 tends to be deliberate, from a rest, so barrel length and even the heavy barrel don't seem to be all that important, or even the caliber. And the M24's adjustable stock---well, I'll leave that for you to think about. It's really only the action and the trigger group that you really want to familiarize yourself with, isn't it? Even if you get one of the SPS's that occasionally come from the factory in such shape that they won't keep a group inside a hat, your purpose will largely be served. Besides, you'll need to save money for that scope. It ain't a cheap one (about $1400).
Also, remember that you're in the Army, where Murphy's law is for optimists. As soon as you qualify, they'll probably issue you the M110, anyway.
Good luck, and thank you for your service.
