I am looking at buying a Remington 700 SPS chambered in .308 with a 1 - 10" twist, 24" barrel, or a Remington 700 SPS Varmint chambered in .308 with a 1 - 12" twist, 26" barrel. Which rifle will be better for 1,000 yard target shooting? Also, this will be my first time using a scoped rifle, and I am clueless about scope strengths, I am looking for one that is powerful enough for 1,000+ yards shooting with a Mil-dot reticle and has Parallax compensation.
I'd say either of those with a competent shooter will do perfectly with some practice, look for a scope with at least 16X magnification, preferably from a single digit magnification to 16X for target acquisition, you'd be surprised at how much it helps.

from $800-$1100 depending on the seller, not inexpensive, but it's needed for consistent long range shooting, shooting past 600 yards is tough for the average person, then wind and other conditions really make a difference on smaller bullets like .30 calibers, not easy or cheap, this isn't child's play, it's shooting passed half a mile!
