I went this morning turkey hunting for the first time. I have a box call, i did have some responses from some turkeys , but i never did get them to come into sight. Im not sure but maybe i spooked them because in conclusion of the hunt they stopped responding. Any advice/information would help me out greatly. Thanks!
2 things that helped me when first started turkey hunting. It helps to have a turkey love doll (decoy) and as hard as it is DON'T OVER DO IT WITH THE CALL BACK.
There is not much more exciting than to have a tom gobble back at you when you do a yelp and at that point you need to try to get it's location and get as close to it that you think you can WITHOUT IT SEEING YOU. Set up and do some purrs and soft yelps.
Visual aid helps sometimes that is why you might want to pick up a decoy. My first tom was gotten when a hen happen to see my decoy and I guess she thought it was coming to take the tom away and she started to fight with my decoy. There was such a commotion that the tom and Jake's came over to see what was going on and the rest is history. That was just awesome to see how they reacted.
Also be sure there are no fences, creeks or other obstructions between you and the bird. For some weird reason they sometimes won't cross them to a call. I have read where sometimes they won't go up a hill to a call even.
Practice your calling and practice your calling.
Make sure you have your camo on with no brilliant colors showing. They have very good eye sight, and know what should be there and what shouldn't.
